About this field

Art educators inspire students around the world, playing a vital role in the lives of children and adults who are interested in art. The art education program at Valdosta State University equips students with the knowledge, skills and experience to become professional art educators or to enter a variety of other professions. Students majoring in art education at Valdosta State take many of the same core classes as students in the general art program but have additional opportunities to gain invaluable teaching experience that will shape their future careers.

The Valdosta State Difference

Students in Valdosta State University’s art education program receive personal attention from faculty, enjoy small classes and have access to 11 studios across campus. Students can display their work in the VSU Fine Arts Gallery and have the opportunity to enter the annual Open Student Competition and participate in the Senior Exhibit. Art education students are invited to participate in Kappa Pi, an organization dedicated to promoting artistic excellence at the college level and beyond.

What You'll Learn

Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program are prepared for T-4 Certification for grades Pre-K-12. The program utilizes a conceptual framework and principles established by Valdosta State’s College of Education and focuses on standards endorsed by the National Art Education Association. Students take visual arts classes as part of the core curriculum, along with specialized classes in art education and general education courses.

In The Future

The Department of Art & Design is working on evolving the BFA in Art Education to a MAT in Art Education. The MAT is a graduate level initial teacher certification program. This program is designed for candidates that have obtained an undergraduate degree in a field outside of education. We are working on refining the specific details for admissions and if the program is hybrid or 100% online. The benefits and reasons are positive for the students. Please see the announcement by Dean Schmidt. This process is estimated to take two to four years. We thank you for your patience.
