Sailing Through Education

Hello!  Welcome to my page.  My name is Shala Smith. I am 21 years old and a Senior at Valdosta State University.  I am in the Special Education Department majoring in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education.  I am extremely excited about becoming a teacher of the Deaf.  I have always been interested in sign language but never once thought that it would be involved in my career choice.  I wanted to be a speech therapist when I first came to Valdosta State.  However, my first semester at Valdosta, I took a sign language course.  That's when I knew that Deaf Education was my calling.

My family has been very important in my life.  Without them I wouldn't have made it as far as I have.  They have truly helped me "sail through education."  My mom is one of my best friends, and I tell her absolutely everything.  My dad is always telling me that he's proud of me, and he always makes me smile.  My brother is 13 years old, and we have become very close to each other since I have moved away to college.  He is an awesome baseball player, and I know that he's going to be a professional baseball player one day.  My family supports me in everything that I do.  I know that I can do anything as long as I have them as my support system.

Baseball is very important to me and my family.  My brother is an awesome baseball player and watching him play is one of my favorite things to do.  He plays for a team called the Young Guns.  Two years ago they placed second in the USSSA Little League World Series.  They amaze me everytime I see them play.

One day I hope to travel to Australia.  It seems like it would be a beautiful place to visit. I've always wanted to see a kangaroo up close and personal, and I absolutely love their accents.
Being a teacher is very important to me.  Children are my passion.  I want to do everything in my power to help children learn.  I believe that I will feel successful when I can go home every night knowing that I have helped at least one child that day.  The World of Teaching is a good website for teachers to go to when needing help with power points.  Another great website is Timesavers for Teachers.  Teachers are very busy.  This is a website that allows teachers to save a little bit of time.  It has fun activities for the students, and it also has fun report card comments.
