My name is Katie. I am an education major from Tifton Georgia. This last fall I graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and I came to Valdosta State University to pursue my education career. I am 20 years old. I have a husband named Justin and a basset hound that we call "Tipsy" because she never walks a straight line. Justin and I have been married for over a year. He is a farmer who loves working hard and eating lots of southern food. He farms with his father and his grandfather so we have a family business. They grow 1500 acres of watermelons, cantelope, peanuts, corn, and cotton. Justin has one sister and we have a nephew named Sumner who we adore. My father is a pastor in Tifton. My mother works to keep up a battered women's shelter in Tifton. I have two brothers who are both U.S. Marines. Justin and I love spending time with eachother and our friends. Our goal is to work together in having a successful marriage, home, and to expand our family past "Tipsy" one day. But for now Justin, Tipsy, and I are pretty happy.

I choose to teach because I enjoy working with teachers and children. I love collaboration and learning from my peers. When I was young my family moved around a lot and making new friends was challenging at times. I allowed educaiton to be a sturdy ground of consistency in my life. No matter where we moved there was always a kind teacher that would speak to me before a classmate. As I grew older I learned to be a social butterfly in which I made friends easily. However, I will never forget the teachers who made the day a little easier socially for me when I was younger. I want to carry the impact that a handful of educators had on me. Their impact has continued to stay rooted in my life and encouraged me through happy times and times of struggle.

My second grade teacher inspired me to teach. Her name was Mrs. Literual. During the year I was in the second grade my family had a house fire in which our house burned down. The week I had returned to school Mrs. Literual gave me a basket in which she has prepared for me. The basket was filled with candy, gum, stickers, and several books. Her kindness allowed me to understand a concept that I had not yet seen in my last three years of public school. Teaching was personal. She cared enough about me to take time and money from her home schedule. She reached me on a personal level which in turn allowed me to respect her on a professional level. I found myself working hard academically for Mrs. Literual. I did not want to disapoint her in any way. She always encouraged me and empowered me with the confidence that I needed to succeed academically. I feel that she has been the greatest example of the Equity Principle.
