Bienvenidos to

Jolie's Journey

Hi!  My name is Jolie Vargas and I am in the Valdosta State University cohort at ABAC.  I am pursuing a second degree in Early Childhood Education and will graduate in the Spring semester of 2005.

I am currently working for the Colquitt County Board of Education as the Migrant Transition Specialist.  There are many different things that I do, but I guess the easiest way to describe my job would be a social worker for hispanic students.  I make home visits and communicate with my student's parents on a weekly basis.  I try to do any little thing that would help a migrant student succeed in every area of school.

I am also expected to communicate with my student's parents in Spanish.  Many people wonder how I learned to speak Spanish and I get the opportunity to tell them about one of my life changing experiences.  When I graduated from college, I had the opportunity to go and live in San Josè, Costa Rica.  I went to Costa Rica as a journeyman missionary with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist.  While I was there, I taught 2 years of first grade and 1 year of kindergarten.  Needless to say, my view of teaching was definitely changed! Also, while I was there, I got to travel to Panama.  We had a wonderful time and did lots of great shopping!

I met my husband while working in Costa Rica.  He was the music teacher at the school I was working at.  We became good friends and 2 years later we were married.  My husband, Paulo, is the Lead Interpreter here in Moultrie at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.  We traveled back to Costa Rica this past Christmas to spend time with Paulo's family.  We had a marvelous time and also met our newborn niece for the first time.  What an angel she is!!!
