ESOL Endorsement at VSU

The English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement credentials pre- or in-service teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages in the public schools of Georgia and prepares any teacher to respond to the needs of the growing number of English language learners in regular content classrooms. The three-course endorsement is valuable not only to language arts teachers; teachers in all fields must respond to the needs of non-native speakers.

During the 2005 fiscal year, Georgia public school districts enrolled over 45,000 students in ESOL programs.  In South Georgia, schools are responding especially--but not only--to the needs of children of migrant workers. Although most LEP students are native speakers of Spanish, speakers of such languages as Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, and Russian also need extra help and understanding. Language-minority students present educational and cultural challenges (and opportunities) to which Georgia teachers must respond. A teacher with an ESOL endorsement is a valuable member of any public school faculty in Georgia.

VSU offers all three of the courses  for the ESOL endorsement in conventional classrooms and via distance learning technologies (at least one course per term is offered by distance learning):

Practicing teachers interested in adding the ESOL endorsement to their certificates by distance learning normally enroll at VSU as non-degree graduate students, an option that expedites application procedures. Distance learning enrollment is limited. Graduate admissions information is available from VSU's Graduate School.

Students taking courses by distance learning attend through WebCT (an online instructional medium) or a combination of WebCT and videotape. To cover mailing costs, distance learning students receiving videotapes may be required to pay a course fee in addition to tuition.

Distance learning students will be expected to participate in online activities (e.g., take quizzes and exams and contribute to discussion forums) and complete written projects. Students enrolled in ESOL 4030 or 6030 will be required to arrange the videotaping of lessons for English language learners.
