Jambo to Learning!
Designed by Abby Thurmond

Jambo! (which means "hello" in Swahili) My name is Abby Thurmond and I am a junior at Valdosta State University. I am studying to become an elementary school teacher by majoring in the Early Childhood and Special Education Department. Along with my passion for children and teaching, I have a passion for traveling!  Two of my most treasured experiences were spent in the summers of 2007 and 2008 when I combined my loves of traveling, children, and teaching, and went to Kenya, Africa.

hello

In Kenya we spent time building an orphanage and visiting children and schools all around rural parts of Kenya. It was an amazing experience. If you want to learn more about my trip and see more pictures check out our Kenya Connection website! Along with traveling, I have a love for athletics. I was a swimmer all throughout high school and in college I became a member of VSU's triathlon club. Living a healthy life is something that is very important to me.

Currently I am teaching aerobics and training for a marathon. I competed in a half-marathon in December of 2009. I had so much fun at the race that I decided to do a full one. A marathon is 26.2 miles of running. I bet I'll be tired when I finish!

But of all the things I love most in this world it is my friends and family. Along with my mother and father, I have an older sister who is a nurse in the emergency room. I can always count on my friends and family to be there for me and support me. I have a truly blessed life!
