What Is Pi Gamma Mu?
Pi Gamma Mu is the oldest, the largest, and the most significant of the honor societies broadly concerned with the social sciences. Since its beginning in 1924 190,000 members have been initiated. There are currently 170 active chapters located in universities and colleges throughout the United States and in the Philippines.
The purpose of Pi Gamma Mu is to foster excellence in the social sciences and to promote cooperation among them. Its primary objectives are to encourage the study of the social sciences among graduate and undergraduate students and faculty members throughout the world, and to recognize outstanding achievement through election to membership and the presentation of various awards for distinguished achievement. In addition, it provides support for its local chapters and assists its members to develop leadership skills.
Starting A Chapter
Any senior college or university interested in establishing a Pi Gamma Mu chapter on its campus should contact the Winfield office for a charter application. Schools making application are expected to offer majors in the majority of social science disciplines with a doctorate level faculty member in each of the areas offering a major. Completed applications are reviewed and, if it is determined that criteria have been met, a site visit is made to the campus. Prospective chapters must have two faculty sponsors and at least 15 initial members to become a chartered chapter. For further information, please contact:
