Augmented reality / virtual reality resource Center

Augmented and Virtual Reaslity Recourse Center. A woman sits in a chair watching a tank on TV.

Dr. David E. Stone, http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/drdavid, has provided an Augmented Reality/Virtual Therapy Resource Center on the Valdosta Virtual Campus to provide faculty, staff and students with information about the use of Second Life and other similar technologies in the delivery of therapy to patients. The information is in the form of copies of published research and videos on the use of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in therapy. Dr. Stone uses these technologies to provide greater control and precision in the use of visual and auditory stimuli in Prolonged Exposure Therapy, but also uses them to support the use of other forms of therapy such as Reframing.

Dr. Stone uses proven methods of treatment but has enhanced them using the new technologies. His approach is reminiscent of the work done by "The Ghost of Christmas Past" in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Dr. Stone calls up scenes from the lives of his patients and uses the emotional power of these incidents to transform the lives of his patients. Occasionally Dr. Stone schedules appointments with visitors to tour these virtual environments on his island in Second Life.
