My first name means “light” in Turkish and the letter “s” sounds like “sh.” I teach introduction to sociology, social problems, sociology of religion, medical sociology, mass media and popular culture for undergraduate students. Having received my Ph.D. at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey, I moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1995. I worked as a researcher and administrator at the University of Florida for several years and moved to Valdosta in 2001.
My study areas in sociology include teaching and learning in sociology, medical sociology, public health and policies, and culture and media.
I have also taught Turkish Folk dances for many years in Turkey and U.S. and participated international festivals in Japan, Spain, Germany, France, Bulgaria, and Greece.
