Converting a Document to PDF Format

Converting a MicroSoft Word 2007 Document to PDF Format

If you don’t have MicroSoft Word 2007 or if your syllabus is in another format (WordPerfect, InDesign, etc.), there are alternatives for converting documents to PDF format. You can check with your department head or department secretary to see about having your documents scanned and converted to .pdf.  There is also an online service you can use (http://www.cutepdf.com; use the CutePDF Writer freeware) or an offline program (http://www.primopdf.com/).

If you need assistance or have any questions, please feel free to contact the Office of Accreditation Compliance (229-333-5845) or send the documents to be converted to jkinney@valdosta.edu.

  • Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer; if you don't, contact the IT HELP desk at 245-HELP.

  • In MicroSoft Word 2007, open the document that you want to convert to PDF.

  • Click on the button at the top left of your screen (the ‘Office Button’.)

  • Hold your cursor over ‘Save As’; a list of options will appear to the right.

  • Click on ‘PDF or XPS’ (‘Adobe PDF’ works too, but this way is faster). In some cases, you will need to follow the directions given in the “Save As” box to get a MicroSoft patch to enable your computer to convert Word docs to .pdf docs.  Once installed, you’ll need to reboot your computer.

  • When the dialog box comes up, click on ‘Desktop’ from the menu on the left side of the box. This saves the file to your desktop.

  • Type in the name of your file, if it’s not already there or you want to rename it.

  • Click ‘Publish’.

  • To prevent having to type your syllabus again next semester or to make corrections, save the Word document as well.

  • You’re done.
