Background

B.A. – Florida State University (Philosophy)

M.A. -- Florida State University (Philosophy)

Ph.D. -- Florida State University (Philosophy)

Aristotelis (Ari) Santas was born in Lefkas, Greece.  He spent most of his early childhood in Athens until he arrived in the United States when he was five years old.  He lived in Chicago, IL for five years, where his father was finishing graduate work in American Literature.  When he was ten his family moved to St. Augustine, Florida, where his father taught in and chaired the Department of English at Flagler College.  Ari received his undergraduate education at Flagler College (St. Augustine), University of Florida (Gainesville), and Florida State University (Tallahassee), where he received a B.A. in Philosophy in 1983.  His initial interests were science, mathematics and engineering, but soon became enamored of philosophy, mostly because of the teachings of Douglas Taylor at Flagler College.  After receiving his B.A., Ari remained at Florida State for his graduate education and received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1989, under the direction of Eugene F. Kaelin, who had been the teacher and mentor of Doug Taylor.  Ari spent his first two years of graduate school focusing on Analytic Philosophy and Philosophy of Mathematics, but later found his deepest interests in American Pragmatism.  His dissertation was entitled “Reason, Reasons, and Rationality: A Pragmatic Evaluation.”  In 1990 Ari moved to Valdosta, GA to teach in the Department of Philosophy at Valdosta State University.  He is married and has three children.  He has been an active participant in the Valdosta area public school system, local community and environmental organizations, and anti-racist and civil rights groups.
