The Sweet Life: Purchasing Agent Serves up Love, One Slice at a Time

Pam Vickers' days are absorbed with bookkeeping in the VSU Purchasing Office; her nights and weekends are filled with chocolate cake topped with milk chocolate ganache and layered with coffee cream cheese icing or cinnamon rolls drizzled with maple glaze or raspberry filled petit fours expertly decorated with lemon buttercream.

If you are what you eat, then the mother of two is as sweet as the confections she has baked daily, with a smile, for the past two years. cake 2Vickers, who began working at VSU in December 2006, has built a regional pastry empire -- PV Sweets -- with the goal of bringing joy to people’s lives, one bite at a time.

Enroll for Benefits By NOV.5!


It's that time of year again to tear into benefits packets and sort out which plan works best for you. Employees must enroll for 2011 benefits by Friday, Nov. 5.


Log into the Employee Self Service System and click on the Benefits Tab for an explanation of plans and enrollment instructions. ADP will send confirmation statements, which employees may edit prior to Friday, Nov. 19.


Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia offers a variety of free online resources that promote wellness initiatives.


The USG has a new online system — "Retirement Manager" — to help you manage your 40b3b and 457 supplemental retirement accounts. Check out the What’s New webpage.


COSA BBQ Chicken Fundraiser


The Council on Staff Affairs (COSA) will hold its annual BBQ Chicken Fundraiser from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Plates of 1/2 smoked chicken, baked beans, potato salad and dinner roll, may be picked up at
either the University Center or at Plant Operations (2903 N. Ashley St.).

Purchase tickets for $7 per carryout plate from a COSA representative before Friday, Nov. 5. All proceeds benefit Employee Recognition Programs.


Pam Sweatt, administrative secretary for the Department of Housing and Residence Life, won a $100 gift card to the VSU Bookstore for walking 65 miles during the monthlong fall Walking Club contest.

About 100 faculty and staff participated in the contest; 38 people achieved the goal of 65 miles.

Leave those pounds in the dust:

Walking 150 minutes per week can reduce your risk of type II diabetes by 58 percent.

Strengthen your heart: Women who walked three hours or more per week reduced their risk of heart attack by 35 percent. Mortality rates among retired men, who walked less than one mile per day, were nearly twice that of men who walked more than two milwalking shoeses per day.

Walk more than 1.5 hours per week, and reap the cognitive mental benefits.

Reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer with at least an hour of walking each week.

Short bouts of walking (three, 10-minute walks per day) are as effective in decreasing body fat content as long bouts of walking (one, 30 minute walk).
