Kristen Johns is Assistant Professor of Music at Valdosta (GA) State University, where she performs regularly with the faculty woodwind and brass quintets, and as principal horn in the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. Prior to her appointment at Valdosta State, she was principal horn with the International Orchestra in San Diego, CA, with Zoltan Rozsnyai, music director. She is active as a soloist, chamber musician, clinician, and adjudicator both nationally and internationally including performances on Guest Artist Recitals at the International Horn Society 31st Annual Symposium, the National Flute Association Convention 2000, the College Music Society 2003 International Conference in Costa Rica, and several regional Horn Society, College Music Society, and MENC conferences. In 2004 she was invited to perform with the "Fromm Players at Harvard." During the 1992 Lincoln Center Mozart Bicentennial Celebration, Dr. Johns performed in Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard Opera Theater. As a member of the University of Michigan Symphony Band, she participated in the World Premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Samstag aus Licht with the La Scala Opera Company, Milan, Italy. She is a founding member the Prism Duo, a horn and organ duo formed with Dr. Michele Johns, a member of the organ faculty at the University of Michigan. The Prism Duo toured Ireland and England in 1995 and has performed numerous recitals across the United States. Upcoming performances include a recital at the 47th International Conference on Organ Music at the University of Michigan. In addition to performing with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, she has performed with the Cincinnati Pops, the Savannah Symphony, the Tallahassee Symphony, the New World Symphony, and the West Virginia Symphony. She has participated in summer festivals such as the Breckenridge Music Institute, the National Repertory Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute, the Kent-Blossom Music Festival, and at the Banff Centre for the Arts. She completed her Doctoral Degree at the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) of the University of Cincinnati where she studied with Michael Hatfield and Steven Gross. She holds a Master of Music degree from CCM and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan where she was a student of Louis Stout. At the Interlochen Arts Academy, she studied with John Jacobson.
