Printable Version

There are several ways to locate full-text journal articles at Odum Library. This guide will explain how to search some of the databases available in GALILEO. Use some of the following databases when you are searching for journal articles related to Education:

Education Databases                         Multidiscipline/Soc/Psyc Databases

ERIC (at EBSCOHost)

Academic Search Complete (EBSCOHost)

ERIC Database (ERIC Education Resources Information Center

Research Library (at ProQuest)

Professional Development (EBSCOHost)

PsycINFO (EBSCOHost)

Many of these databases are published by EBSCOhost. Therefore, they have the same interface and can be searched at the same time; this capability will save you time when you are searching for full-text articles. This guide demonstrates how to search one database at a time, how to search multiple databases, and how to search for full-text articles if you have a citation for an article.

Full-text articles are NOT available in this database.  Sociological Abstracts results will provide citations and abstracts for articles.  This database is useful when conducting a literature review on a research topic.  Remember, NO full-text!  Once you get your results list, you will then take the citation and search in E-Journals for the full text.

  • Access GALILEO
  • Select Sociological Abstracts from the Databases A-Z tab
  • Select the Advanced Search tab
  • Enter in your search terms/subjects into the search boxes (note the Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT are available).  Select the appropriate Boolean Operators to “connect” your search terms/subjects together
  • Limit your results by checking the Journal Articles only box
  • Select search or press the enter key

Searching for Full-Text Article Availability

Searching in E-Journals is very helpful when you have an article citation (such as, the citations you would receive from searching Sociological Abstracts).  This database allows you to search for Journal Titles available in many of the GALILEO databases at Odum Library.

  • If you are Off-Campus: Go to the Odum Library homepage, http://www.valdosta.edu/library/
  • Select Anywhere Access (located left side of screen under Main Menu)
  • Type in your BlazeNet username & password
  • Select E-Journals
  • Type the title of the Journal you are searching for in the FIND search box
  • If the Journal is available in electronic format, the title will appear followed by a list of databases the journal is available through
  • Select one of the available database names
  • Select the appropriate year of publication
  • Select the appropriate issue
  • Select the title of the article (selecting pdf or html full-text will allow you to print)

Please note: sometimes you will see the message“12 month embargo”.  This means the most recent issue from the past 12 months are not available Online at this time.

If a Journal Title is not available Online in an electronic database, try searching for a print version in the GIL Catalog.  If Odum Library does not have a print copy, you can submit an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) request to have a copy made of an article and sent to you.
