Searching in EBSCOhost Databases (Video)

What is EBSCOhost?

EBSCOhost is an interface provided by EBSCO, a company that provides access to many proprietary full-text databases from leading information providers.  EBSCOhost is not a database in itself.  The comprehensive databases in EBSCOhost range from general reference collections to specially designed, subject-specific databases for public, academic, medical, corporate and school libraries.  These are not all the databases that Odum Library has access to; some databases are hosted by ProQuest, WilsonWeb, OCLC FirstSearch, and other interfaces.

When creating your Works Cited/References/Bibliography, make sure that you cite the database name (like "Academic Search Complete" or "ERIC"), and not “EBSCOhost”.

Searching in Multiple Databases

It is possible to search in multiple EBSCOhost databases at the same time.  This can save you both time and effort when searching.

  • Once inside an EBSCOhost database, click on the Advanced Search link. The Advanced Search has more options that are helpful for scholarly research.

Highlighting the Advanced Search link

  • There is a Choose Databases link in both the Basic and Advanced Search. Clicking on this will bring up a menu of all available EBSCOhost databases.

Highlights the checkboxes next to each database name, as well as the Continue button.

  • You will notice that you are now searching in multiple databases.  Click Show More to expand the list, and click Show Less to compress the list.

Shows the Select a Database window, highlighting Academic Search Complete.

Adding Records to your Folder

The Folder is useful for temporarily saving records while searching.  If you have created a My EBSCOhost account, you can save records permanently.

  • Once inside an EBSCOhost database, you can temporarily save records by clicking on the Add to Folder icon.

  • If you want to have a permanent EBSCOhost folder, click on Sign In in the top right corner.  You will need to create a free account if you have not done so already.

  • To access your folder at any time, click the Folder button in the top right corner.

Highlights the "Add" icon next to each record.
