Downloading Odum Library eBooks
The following instructions will work for any e-reader that supports Adobe Digital Editions.
All Android e-readers, such as Sony, Nook, etc. support Adobe Digital Editions directly. iPads support Adobe Digital Editions through third-party apps, such as BlueFire and Txtr Reader.
Downloading eBrary eBooks
Downloading requires Adobe and eBrary accounts, and reading requires an Adobe Digital Editions reader, such as BlueFire or Txtr Reader.
An eBrary account is required to download an eBook. To create a new eBrary account:
- Go to the eBrary database (ask a librarian for help if needed)
- Click Sign In the upper right corner
- Click Create a New Account and follow the instructions.
An Adobe account is required in order view the book you downloaded. To create an Adobe account:
- Go to the Adobe Sign In page, https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/
- Click the Create an Adobe Account button on the left side of the page and follow the instructions.
Downloading eBooks on EBSCOhost (NetLibrary) eBooks
Downloading requires EBSCO and Adobe accounts, and reading requires an Adobe Digital Editions reader, such as BlueFire or Txtr Reader.
An EBSCO account is required to download an eBook. To create a new EBSCO account:
- Go to the “eBooks on EBSCOhost” database (ask a librarian for help if needed).
- Click Sign In in the top right corner.
- Click Create a New Account and follow the instructions.
An Adobe account is required in order view the book you downloaded. To create an Adobe account:
- Go to the Adobe Sign In page, https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/
- Click the Create an Adobe Account button on the left side of the page and follow the instructions.
Downloading Virtual Reference Library (Gale) Materials
Virtual Reference Library does not require an individual account to download. Virtual Reference Library eBooks are downloadable by section (chapter, encyclopedia entry, etc.).
- Go to the Virtual Reference Library database (ask a librarian for help if needed).
- You can search for your topic using keywords in the basic search box, or click on "Advanced Search" to search by title, author, etc.
- After selecting a book, find a chapter or section by browsing the Table of Contents.
- When you arrive at the section you want to download, click on Download on the gray horizontal bar above the e-book and select PDF.
- If you are downloading the section for an e-reader, select Download PDF to e-reader instead and follow the directions Gale provides - this link is on the same bar as the Download link, further to the right.
- Many Virtual Reference Library book sections are also downloadable as audio – click Download MP3 to download the audio file.
Searching for eBooks at Odum Library
The simplest way to find eBooks is to use the Advanced Search in the GIL-FIND@VSU Odum Library Catalog. Odum Library has eBrary, EBSCOhost, and Virtual Reference Library eBooks.
- Go to the library home page, http://www.valdosta.edu/library/ and click on the Books tab
- Click on GIL-FIND@VSU Odum Library Catalog
- Click on Advanced Search
- Click on Electronic, located under Format
- Type the keyword(s), title, or author in the search box(es) and click on Find
You might see a few online journals and CD-ROMs mixed in the list, depending on your search, but most of the results should be eBooks.
