FOLKLIFE OF WIREGRASS GEORGIA: OF FARMS AND FARMING The farmer's landscape in South Georgia presents gently rolling pine and oak forests and savanna punctuated by cypress swamps and sandy bottoms. The soil of the region is rich and fertile and has for generations supported fine, productive farms. The varied crops of the area include peanuts, cotton, bright leaf tobacco, spring wheat, field corn, soy beans, pecans, slash pine, fruits, and vegetables. Cattle, hogs, and goats graze in pastures, woodlands, and pecan groves. Watermelon Harvest, Cook County, Georgia. Photo by Laurie Kay Sommers, 2001. |
