Scope and Contents of the Materials
Charles and Jeannette Kessler donated 140 items, from antique Ban Chiang pottery, antique textiles and Tibetian photographs. Jeannette Kessler was an avid collector of antique textiles. Some pieces she bought to show and some she had made into clothes. In all over 60 textiles from South East Asia are part of this collection.
Charles Kessler made several trips to Tibet in 1999 and 2000. Kessler, an amateur photographer, was fascinated by the people he met there and created a photography exhibit, “Faces of Tibet” which has been exhibited in galleries previously. These are 67 images from that exhibit that are part of this collection. The photographs were taken with a LeichaM6 Camera on his travels.

- Item 1: Indonesia Ceremonial Wrap, Possible 18/19th Century


- Bali, Tenganan Pageringsingan, The 'Bebali' cotton cloth textile is worked in the geringsing-double ikat pattern, the fine warp tan-cotton base, dyed and embroidered in muted colors of brown, red and black of central concave square, or star medallion, reflecting on the end panels, the field with repeating rows of stylized seated figures about two foliate bands; The end 'guards' with repeating diamond geometric bands terminating with fringe edges, 20.75 x 76 inches.
- Item 2: Indonesian 'Tampan' Ceremonial Cloth, Circa 19th Century


- Sumatra, Lampong region, The cotton cloth woven in primary colors of red and black with upper and lower stylized flower friezes, the field worked with lower section of large ship's hull, viewed with numerous figures below V and X shaped masts, and flanked by multiply oars; The upper section worked in a mirror design of boxes, figures and two ship's hulls, the whole interrupted by geometric motifs, 28.5 x 31 inches.
