Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Arthur White Collection includes general memorabilia from Mr. White’s long career with TIME Magazine. The topics and subject matters are varied. This collection provides a wide range of artifacts, including, but not limited to: correspondence, newspaper articles, pamphlets, passports, birth certificates, brochures, and personal and work-related keepsakes. Most of the artifacts were in good to decent condition, few were in fair condition. A large amount of the content in this collection is in the original format.

Administrative Information

Accruals: The 25 boxes, 28 linear feet, came to us in batches. The first batch was a bunch of boxes that had been poorly stored. Plastic bins were also sent over with publications and papers in better condition. Also, we have been given scanned images and documents from the Lowndes County Historical Society from the Louie Peeples Collection that relate to the White Collection. We acquired the collection over the course of a year.

Acquisition Method: The Arthur White collection is a subset of the Louie Peeples White papers which she left to the Lowndes County Historical Society (LCHS). Because of the international nature of this collection, they have donated it to the VSU Archives where they expect it will be able to be used with classes and other patrons not naturally drawn to LCHS.

Appraisal Information: This is a valuable collection because White was an international correspondent for Time magazine during the late 1950's thru the 1980's. Issues of the times from Johnson's poverty programs to Watergate to the birth of Punk Rock are covered in these ms. There are photographs, copies of Time magazine, interview notes, drafts of stories, edits of stories, and final published versions. There are also personal papers and information about travel. This collection should be of use to students and researchers in journalism, political science, history and international affairs.The condition of the papers is fair, and bad in some cases.

Folder 1: Miner's Strike - Article: The first of three folders about the Britihs Miner's strike in 1984. The strike was in response to the chairmen of the National Coal Board planning to close seventy five of the one hundred seventy five coal plants in Britain.

Folder 4: West Virginia Mining and Cheseapeake Bridge: Contains information pertaining to West Virginia coal mining, Breathitt County, theCheseapeake Bay Bridge and watershed.
Folder 5: Medical Clippings: Newspaper clippings pertaining to medical issues such as heart problems, and high blood pressure.
Folder 6: Heightism: Contains articles about heightism in American politics and specific examples of height descrimination in America.
Folder 7: Alcohol: Contains articles about the increase in drunkeness and alcoholism in Great Britain.
Folder 8: Miscellaneous Clippings about Health and Medicine: Clippings for personal use.
Folder 9: Alcoholism in Europe: Folder is about the epidemic of alcoholism in Europe. Also contains several articles about Yootha Joyce, a British television actress who died from liver failure arising from alcohol consumption.
Folder 10: Health and Morality: Contains articles from newspapers targeting advice columns and detailing lay medical advice on a host of health-related subject. A strong moral message is infused with all advice.
Folder 11: Voluntary Suicide: A collection of articles debating the right to voluntary euthanasia for the terminally ill in Britain.
Folder 12: In the Land of Breathitt: Contains book titled In the Land of Breathitt which provides a general history of Breathitt County, Kentucky until the early twentieth century.
Folder 13: U.S. Highway 35 Bridge Collapse Report: Cotains government-issued booklet on the US Highway 35 Bridge Collapse in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Folder 14: First American Bank Excavation - Notes: Contains Arthur White's hndwritten notes for a story on the First National Bank Excavation in Nashville, Tennessee. Small and large field notepads, sketches, and memoranda are included.
Folder 15: Bank Cavern Excavation - Printed Material: Includes bank's printed material and statement from Vice Chairmen of the Board. Also includes summary overviews of archaeological dig below the bank building.
Folder 16: First American Bank Excavation - Notes: Contains memoranda and drafts of Arthur White's proposed article on the archaeological containing human and smilidon remains below Nashivlle's First American Bank.
Folder 17: Dismal Swamp: Contains drafts of Arthur White's story on the Great Dismal Swamp located in Virginia and North Carolina. Contains the short article TIME printed.
Folder 18: Buffalo Creek Dam Break - Memos, Notes, and Articles: Materials evaluate the catastrophic failure of the Buffalo Creek Dam in Logan County, West Virginia. Items also evaluate the destruction of the flood. Arthur White's notes are included.
Folder 19: Buffalo Creek Dam Break - Press Releases: Contains press releases by the Buffalo Creek Citizen's Commission and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The first examine the disaster in human and material terms; the latter examines the disaster in technical terms.
Folder 20: Ameican G.I. Grafitti - Articles and Memoirs: Contains articles pertaining to the transport of American Grafitti back tto the United States from Britain. The grafitti was painted by American sodliers while stationed in Britain durign World ar II.
