The 994 Tag in MARC Bibliographic Records - for Voyager Users

OCLC's May 1999 Technical Services Bulletin announced the implemention of the 994 tag in MARC bibliographic records. The tag will "preserve the unique relation between the holding library code and the institution symbol after symbol expansion." The OCLC Technical Services Bulletin is available online at http://www.oclc.org/oclc/tb/tb232/frames_man.htm

The 994 tag is created automatically when you import an OCLC record into any other system. In the Voyager Cataloging Module, you will not be allowed to save your MARC record to the database unless you (a) delete the 994 tag from the record, or (b) add the 994 tag to your Voyager OCLC tag tables.

To add the 994 tag to the tag tables:
(NOTE: You will have to do this on each cataloger's PC):

1. Find the file Bmarc9xx.cfg on your C drive and open it in Notepad (or any word processor). In our system, the path to this file is: C:/Voyager/Catalog/Tag Table/OCLC/Bmarc9xx.cfg.

2. Add the following text to the Bmarc9xx.cfg file:

[994]
0=a 0M
1=b 0M
Subfa=Transaction code
Subfb=Institution symbol

[994Ind1]
0=_
Value_=No information provided

[994Ind2]
0=_
Value_=No information provided

3. Save the file. You should then be able to save any MARC record containing the 994 tag.
