Access, Borrowing, & Privileges

I'm not affiliated with the university.  May I use the library?

The library is open to the general public. Visitors not affiliated with the university are free to consult materials while in the library. You must have borrower's privileges to check material out.  Computer users not registered at VSU are encouraged to save documents on flash drives, CDRs & CDRWs, or send via email attachments to the user's personal email account.  For printing, users may purchase Guest Print 1Cards from the 1Card office.

I'm not affiliated with the university. May I get a library card and charge materials out?

Local residents who are not affiliated with VSU and have research needs that cannot be met by the public library, may apply for community borrower's card.

How many books can I check out?

There is no set limit on the number of materials which may be checked out by currently enrolled fee paid VSU students and currently employed staff and faculty.  There are established limits for others.  Community borrowers are limited to 10 total items.  Retired faculty and staff are limited to 25 total items.

What is the loan period for circulating items?

All materials on the third floor have a 28-day charge-out period for students, staff, community borrowers, retirees, and dependents. Faculty have academic-year borrowing privileges on third-floor material. Browsing books, housed on the second floor, have a 14-day charge-out period for all borrowers.

Reserve items have circulation periods varying from one hour within building use to seven days.  

How can I renew books that I have checked out?

Most items can be renewed as long as the title has not been requested by another user. Online renewal is available from the Library's website, http://www.valdosta.edu/library/, underneath the left red 'Main Menu' select My Library Account and log into the Renewals Online & Due Dates account.  You may also visit either of the Library's Circulation desks on 1st or 2nd floors or telephone (229) 333-5869.  You will be asked to provide your VSU 1Card or VSU Institutional ID number.

Can I check out video?

The library has an extensive collection of videos. Videos located on the third floor and in the second floor Instructional andFine Arts Materials Collections circulate 28 days, similar to the books. The feature films on "Course Reserves" intended for in-building viewing circulate for only four hours.

May I check-out periodicals?

Normal library practice is that periodicals and journals do not circulate outside of the building.  However with the material in hand, users may visit the 2nd floor Circulation desk staff and explain why an exception should because of a specific need or situation.

May I check-out headphones?

Headphones are available for checkout at the Circulation desks by VSU students, staff, and faculty (including South Georgia College Entry Program students). Library users NOT eligible for headphone checkout include GHP students, community borrowers (including alumni), and Valdosta Technical College students.

There is a problem with my GIL or GIL UC library catalog account.  What do I do?

Contact the Circulation Desk (229-333-5869) for help with GIL or GIL UC library catalog accounts, such as removing holds and blocks from your account, paying fines, or renewing items.

The Odum Library offers a Live Chat service. If you are trying to contact a particular reference librarian see Reference Services for individual telephone numbers and email addresses.

What are the holiday hours or hours during the academic break?

Holiday and other academic break hours are provided in the Hour of Operation link as posted on the library's website, http://www.valdosta.edu/library/ , right gray column labeled "Office Hours". 

What are the hours for Reference service?

Study Rooms, Room Reservation, View a video

Does the library have student individual and group study rooms available?

There are over 20 group study rooms available on a "first come, first serve" basis on the first and third floors of the library. The Circulation II desk, on the first floor, has four additional study rooms available for two-hour checkout, located near the Internet Café. Adaptive technology for students with disabilities is available in rooms 1060 and 1070 as adjacent to the Internet Café.

How do I find the key-punch code for the available faculty carrels ?

On the fourth floor of the Odum Library Addition, there are several faculty carrels available. These carrels are for general faculty use and cannot be "checked out." The keypunch code for these carrels is available at the main Circulation Desk.

What is the key-punch code for the library graduate study rooms?

There are two rooms on the third floor of the library (#3620 and #3626) reserved for graduate student study. The key-punch code for these rooms is available from the Graduate School in the Continuing Education Building (229-222-5694).

Does the library have adaptive technology for students with disabilities?

Adaptive technology for students with disabilities is available in rooms 1060 and 1070 as adjacent to the Internet Café.

Does the library have a presentation practice room?

A presentation practice room is located in the 1st floor Media Center.  The practice room is equipped with a digital projector, DVD/VHS playback decks, 5 -1 surround sound speaker system as well as a small lectern desk with laptop connection.

Are the library classrooms and meeting rooms available for reservation?

Following the Library's Room Reservation policy, Student Organizations in good standing may place an online request for Room 1480 on the first floor of Odum Library, for a group event.

Where can I view videos in the library?

The 2nd Floor FAMC Listening Lab located behind the IT Helpdesk has televisions with a VHS tape and DVD players.  If those seats are occupied or to arrange group viewing visit the 1st floor Media Center.

Faxing and Scanning

Where can I send and receive a fax in the library?

The 2nd floor Circulation Desk provides fax services.

The 1st floor Media Center provides image scanning among many other applications needed when working with digital media.
