The Library's addition was opened to the public in January, 2004, after staff moved into the office spaces and the Reference collection and service point was established in the new expansion. Construction on the 95,000 square foot expansion of Odum Library's facilities was begun in August 13, 2001 and completed in November, 2003. The expansion cost $14.2 million. Distinctive features include a 24-hour internet cafe, the GALILEO Information Commons area, a highly popular electronic classroom, a 100 seat auditorium, an expanded Media Center, a new climate-controlled Archives & Special Collections area, more study spaces, and additional book shelving. An Open House for the new addition took place Wednesday, August 25 in the new atrium. A dedication ceremony featured Congressman Jack Kingston of Georgia's First Congressional District. VSU President Dr. Ronald M. Zaccari and University Librarian Dr. George R. Gaumond also provided remarks. Due to interest in library architecture, the provided images and video, provide a historical record of this construction project. |
