Dr. Howard griffin
Assistant Professor of International Business
A native of Valdosta and alumnus of VSU, Dr. Howard Griffin earned undergraduate degrees in both Economics and Spanish. Soon after graduating, he spent several months in Brazil before embarking upon an ESL teaching assignment in Guadalajara, Mexico. Upon returning, he began a graduate program in International Business Studies at the University of South Carolina. As part of the program, he was able to study in São Paulo, Brazil and complete an internship with IBM in Rio de Janeiro. These experiences awakened a thirst for travel that has led him to spend time in countries as diverse as Thailand, Portugal, and Argentina.
While living in Miami, FL in the late 1990s, Griffin began teaching at a small college as an adjunct while also operating a tutoring franchise. However, having grown up in Valdosta and being around the military for much of his life, Griffin felt an urge to serve. He was offered a direct commission into the U.S. Air Force Medical Service Corps in 2000 and subsequently stationed at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX as a hospital administrator. While living in San Antonio, he began another adjunct assignment and taught over forty business courses during a stretch of almost eight years. During this time, Griffin began to feel that the life of a university professor was his true calling and enrolled in a doctoral program in International Business Administration at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX, on the U.S./Mexico border.
While ABD status in his doctoral studies, Griffin accepted a position at a private institution in St. Louis, MO and completed his doctorate in December 2009. He is delighted to return to VSU and eager to be working with the newly created International Business program.
