iMac Equivalents to PC Labs Listed by Program

  • Internet Explorer
    • While Internet Explorer is not available on iMacs for web browsing, two browsers are. Safari is the iMac's default web browser. Also, iMac labs have Mozilla Firefox installed.
  • Microsoft Frontpage / Expression Web
    • Frontpage is currently used in several classes to create and modify web pages. There is currently no Microsoft Frontpage equivalent in the iMac labs.
  • Microsoft Office 2007 / 2010
    • Currently there is no equivalent program on the iMacs for Microsoft Office 2007/2010. If you are using Microsoft Office 2007, make sure you save your files in compatible file types. There is currently no Microsoft Access equivalent in the iMac labs.
  • SSH Secure Shell File Transfer Client
    • Students normally use SSH Secure Shell File Transfer Client to upload files to their Valdosta State University personal website from a PC. While SSH Secure Shell File Transfer Client is not available on the iMacs, Cyberduck offers the same functionality.
  • SPSS
    • SPSS is a program used for graphing and statistics. Unless the class requires the use of SPSS specifically, you can perform calculations and create graphs in Microsoft Excel 2004. Otherwise, there is currently no equivalent to SPSS in iMac labs.
  • Windows Media Player
    • Windows Media Player is available for the iMacs but it is not installed. Both QuickTime Player and iTunes provide similar functionality to Windows Media Player.

  • Web Browsers
    • The iMacs have Safari and Mozilla Firefox as their web browsers.
  • Web Page Editors
    • iWeb is available as a web page editor for the iMacs.
  • Word Processors
    • Microsoft Word is installed on the iMacs.
  • Spreadsheet Program
    • Microsoft Excel is installed on the iMacs.
  • Presentation Program
    • Microsoft PowerPoint is installed on the iMacs.
  • FTP Clients (File Transfer Protocol)
    • Cyberduck is available on the iMacs as a FTP client.
  • Media Players
    • The iMacs have both iTunes and QuickTime available as media players.
  • Statistics Program
    • Currently there is no Statistics Program for the iMacs.
