Live and study for five weeks in Ireland’s oldest city! See the cultural, artistic, and historical treasures which have made Ireland a destination for generations! Waterford, a walled city of Viking origins, retains much of its medieval character together with the graceful buildings from its 18th century expansion.

Just 100 miles south of Dublin, Waterford City is home to Waterford Crystal and gives you access to many castles, houses, gardens, and prehistoric sites. West of Dungarvan is a wild and beautiful peninsula containing the historic seaside resort of Ardmore and The Gaeltacht, a unique Gaelic speaking area. Southeast of Waterford City is the East Waterford Gaultier Coast, a peninsula with a distinct Anglo-Norman character, containing the seaside resort of Dunmore East.
The group departs for Ireland on June 20 and returns to the United States on July 25th, 2013. Classes are held at the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). Class session are held Mondays and Wednesdays, when half the courses meet in the morning and half in the afternoon. There is also a mandatory one-hour Introduction to Irish Culture course that all students are required to take on Wednesday afternoons. Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for field trips. Your three-day weekends are free for trips out and about the island or all of Europe.

The Waterford (Ireland) Summer Study Abroad Program is based at the Waterford Institute of Technology. The campus is not far from the historic center of Waterford and is only a short walk from the bus system which provides easy access to the city and neighboring regions. The nearby Waterford Airport also offers quick flights to Galway, and London, as well as to France, Portugal, Spain, and The Netherlands.
Health Matters and Insurance
Participants are provided with health-care insurance that covers them while they are abroad.
Information about local doctors and medical facilities will be available at the Waterford Institute of Technology. Students with special medical problems may be required to provide a physician’s assurance of their ability to undertake foreign travel and study. It is not possible for the European Council to guarantee accessible facilities abroad for students with special needs.
Participants should bring medications they regularly depend upon and should have copies of prescriptions in generic form in case they need to acquire additional medications. No special immunizations are needed to enter Ireland, and the International Immunization Certificate is not required.
Passports and Visas
Everyone who travels to Ireland must have a valid passport. Participants who have old passports should have them renewed. Participants who have never had a passport should begin the process of obtaining one immediately; it sometimes takes six to eight weeks to get a passport. Local post office have information on where to get application forms and directions for obtaining a passport.
Holders of U.S. passports do not need visas to enter Ireland for summer study. Participants traveling on passports of other countries should contact their campus representative for assistance in determining whether they will need to acquire a visa.
