Core Matters CONFERENCE
We invite you to the Core Matters Conference, to be held April 9-10, 2010.

The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, 2010, at the Valdosta State University's "University Center", located at 1215 N. Patterson Street. Our conference will be held at the north end of the UC.
Registration begins at 4pm on Friday, for our kick-off events. Please come early so you can pick up your program, name tags, and meal tickets.

If you would like full access to the conference, including meals, please register HERE. As time is short, you may register via email, and pay at the door (make checks payable to "VSU Foundation").
If you would like to attend Saturday's presentations (no meals), tickets are $5 at the door.

Core Matters Conference
“Making Core Matter”

April 9 - 10, 2010
Valdosta State University invites you to submit presentation and panel proposals for its first annual Core Matters Conference. Recognizing that the heart of any college education is its Core or General Education program, this meeting is interested in all matters related to Core instruction, both practical and theoretical. Specifically, it is designed to improve communication between departments, to enhance the quality of Core instruction, and to promote university-wide commitment to achieving general education goals.
Papers, panels, workshops and round-table discussion may include any and all aspects of the following topics:
- Rigor – including rigor in grading, standards, advising, hiring of Core faculty, and personal integrity
- Understanding the University System of Georgia’s Core Curriculum, including its origins, present form, and possible future revisions
- Using the university’s General Education outcomes to assess student learning in Core curriculum courses, including developing effective assessment activities, improving department-wide participation in assessment activities, and using assessment results to improve Core curriculum instruction
- Teaching effective Perspectives courses
- Communicating and coordinating instructional goals across disciplinary boundaries
- Incorporating non-traditional pedagogy into Core curriculum courses, including cohorts, team-teaching, online/hybrid classes, and other innovative formats matters to the university system
- Making the Core matter to students
- Fostering a global vision in Core curriculum courses
- Finding professional development opportunities for improving Core curriculum courses
Presentations – Papers, poster panels, or results of research should be of sufficient length to allow for a 20 minute presentation, followed by a 10 minute Q&A session. Prospectus should include a 200-300 word abstract, a 100 word description for the program, and a completed conference application detailing audio/visual requirements, etc.
Panels – Panels should be planned to fill approximately 30-40 minutes, followed by a 15 minute Q&A session. Ideally, panels should include three members with differing viewpoints. Prospectus should include a 200-300 word abstract, a 100 word description for the program, and a completed conference application detailing panel members, audio/visual requirements, and whether or not you need additional panel members (we may be able to compose a single panel based on your and another’s panel proposal).
Round Table Session – If you would like to host a round-table session, please submit a 200-300 word prospectus with a general outline of goals and outcomes for the session.
Journal –If you would like your presentation to be considered for inclusion in our first “Core Matters” journal, please submit a complete paper of 4-15 pages in length by May 15, 2010. Submit it as an email attachment to jlugo@valdosta.edu.
