On January 24, 1984, Anthony Crews, a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of the VPD, was ending his shift when he received a call for back up from officer Barry Hall. When Lee arrived at the scene he saw a person of interest running behind the C&S Bank (now the Bank of America) and gave chase. He caught the suspect, but was shot during the struggle and later died.
He is survived by his mother, wife, two sons, two sisters and two brothers.
In 2011 the family decided to begin the Lee Anthony Crews Memorial Scholarship Fund for C.J. Majors at Valdosta State University. The scholarship will be awarded to VSU students from Berrien, Brooks, Cook, Echols, Lanier and Lowndes Counties majoring in Criminal Justice.
