COUNCIL ON STAFF AFFAIRS

The Council on Staff Affairs met in Pound Hall, Room #106, Monday, = May 3,=20 1993.=20

Present: Norma Barr, Vanessa Brunston, Angel Diaz, Bill England, = Juanita=20 Faircloth, Inman Grimsley, Ann Holland, Carl James, Russ Mast, John = Miller,=20 Donna Nolan, Steve Roberts, H. Watson and Karrie Yeatman.=20

Absent: Robert Lee, Bob Krawcyzk and Allie Thomas=20

AGENDA=20

  1. President Russ Mast called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.=20

  2. A motion was made and passed to approve the Minutes of the April = 5th=20 meeting.=20

  3. Committee Reports=20

    a) Executive Committee (Russ Mast) - See Items 4 & 6 below.=20

    b) Communications Committee (Steve Roberts) - The election = results have=20 been tabulated and results will be forwarded to you next week.=20

    c) Welfare Committee (Angel Diaz) - no report.=20

    d) Policy Committee (Karrie Yeatman) - no report.

  4. Reports from the Chairperson. University Celebration/Convocation = is June=20 30th and July 1st.=20

  5. Old Business=20

    a) Alcohol Ban (Bob Bell) - unable to attend.

  6. New Business=20

    a) Council Minutes - Several staff persons have called stating = they were=20 not receiving COSA Minutes. Minutes are mass mailed through regular=20 intercampus mail. Anyone not receiving minutes should let Steve = Roberts or=20 Juanita Faircloth know and you will be put on a specific mailing = list.=20

    b) Computer Networking - Ann Holland reported that we do have = campus=20 networking, although it is not complete. Hopefully it will be soon. = Also,=20 computer standards on campus specify the use of WP 5.1 and Borlan. = Ann=20 Holland made a motion that COSA adhere to these standards. Karrie = Yeatman=20 seconded the motion and the motion passed.=20

    c) Review of Faculty Senate Bill concerning Equal Opportunity = Employment=20 statement "sexual orientation" (see attachment). After a lengthy = discussion=20 with the COSA favoring omitting "sexual orientation" in the = policy/clause=20 statements, Bill England made the following motion: COSA at this = time,=20 neither endorses nor rejects the Faculty Senate Clause and the SGA = policy=20 regarding the inclusion of "sexual orientation" in mandated=20 nondiscrimination statements but recommends referral to the Board of = Regents=20 of the University System of Georgia. The motion was seconded by = Angel Diaz=20 and passed with 3 abstaining votes. Each staff member at VSC is = encouraged=20 to let your representative on COSA know your preference regarding = the=20 "sexual orientation" policy/clause. Please call so we will know the=20 consensus feeling of the staff. Russ will write a letter to Dr. = Bailey to=20 let him know your feelings.

  7. Special Order of the Day.=20

    a) Vanessa Brunston asked if staff have the option of a flexible = working=20 schedule. The Policy Committee will look into this.=20

    b) H. Watson asked about the status of the Salary Survey. As of = now=20 there is no survey.
