VALDOSTA STATE UNIVERSITY
COUNCIL ON STAFF AFFAIRS =
(COSA)
Special=20
Meeting for 1996 Seasonal Holiday Schedule
Minutes - January 31,=20
1996

Present: Joan Brooks, Sandra Denson, Wanda DeWeese, Bill Filtz, Blake =

Griffin, Inman Grimsley, Mary Jane Keene, Bert Rodrigues, Pat Rozier, =
Sue Teel,=20
Paul Worth, James Yates=20

Chair, Sue Teel, called the meeting to order at 8.35 AM in the =
President's=20
 Dining Room, Palms Dining Center.=20

Options for the 1996 Seasonal Holiday schedule were discussed to =
be=20
 presented to President Bailey. Consideration was given to the 3 =
floating days,=20
 the three scheduled days of December 24-25, 1996 and January 1, 1997,=20
 additional mandatory vacation or leave without pay, and a shift to a =
four 10=20
 hours per day week.=20

Members preferred to have the week of December 23-27 as the =
official=20
 holiday and have December 30 and 31 as mandatory annual leave days or =
leave=20
 without pay. COSA members felt this was the best option to benefit =
most staff=20
 members who keep leave on the books and are able to plan in advance =
for days=20
 off. Since staff will be given almost a full year notice of the =
seasonal=20
 schedule, everyone should be able to plan to take off those two days =
in=20
 December without being penalized.=20

A second option was passed which eliminates the mandatory leave =
days of=20
 December 30 and 31. The concern with this option is that if the =
University is=20
 open then in the small offices the secretary would be required to work =
these=20
 days to keep the office open.=20

The members also discussed the proposed registration set for =
Saturday,=20
 January 4, 1997. Members felt very strongly that this is not a good =
option=20
 since it would cost the University quite a bit of money to bring staff =
members=20
 in on a Saturday. Also, this would cause a morale problem since staff =
would=20
 have to work Saturday, of which most students would not take =
advantage, and be=20
 paid straight time due to the holiday during that work week. Members =
felt a=20
 better solution would be to add a Saturday class to the schedule for =
winter=20
 quarter. This would not cost any extra for faculty salaries and =
students would=20
 be on campus so their attending classes would not be a problem.=20

The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 AM
