Mission Statement

Learning in Retirement (LIR) is an organization for individuals 50 years of age and above that provides a unique opportunity for cultural growth, lifelong learning, and recreation.

LIR is member-led and university-sponsored. Members are involved in determining curriculum, recruiting new members, managing the budget, and developing social programming.

What is the Purpose of LIR?

LIR provides older adults with the opportunity to take part in college level course work on a non-credit basis (there are no tests and no grades). The curriculum is chosen, designed, and often led by the members, encouraging peer learning and active member participation. LIR's capitalize on the strengths and experiences of older adults, empowering them to continue learning, expand their horizons, and enhance their personal development.

Who Can Join?

Membership is open to men and women who have reached retirement age (50 or older) and are interested in expanding and enhancing their knowledge. No previous formal education is required.

What About The Institute At VSU?

Our institute began in January 1996, and our membership is growing. We have a dedicated group of area seniors who work to provide learning and social opportunities for themselves and others. Classes offered reflect the interests and desires of our membership. It's a place to learn, have fun, and meet new friends.

How Can I Find Out More?

Call (229) 245-6484 to find out what is ahead for our institute or to see how you can become involved. There's a place here for you!!
