Camp Rec Room The Afternoon Rec Room
Want a cool place to hang out in the afternoons? Then the Rec Room is for you! Enjoy a wide range of facilitated activities and learning experiences. Activities will include science experiments, fun outdoor games, reading, acting, arts and crafts, special guests (musicians, artists, writers, pets) and more! In addition to group activities, individual activities are included for those who are inspired to work alone.

     Dates: Every Week - June 3 - July 26

International Traditional Art: The Island Connection Ages 11+

Enjoy learning about traditional art techniques of two island cultures: Australia and Japan. During this week you will create a dot painting based on Australian Aboriginal traditions and a traditional Japanese carp kite (which will incorporate sumi painting and printmaking).

Learn beginning riding at a working horse farm! Campers will learn proper mount, dismount, and riding techniques, as well as how to groom, saddle, and bridle horses. Wear long pants and solid, hard-bottom shoes.

Designed for campers who are a little young for the other LEGO classes, but want to begin building with LEGOs.

Use your imagination as you build towers, bridges, castles, and all kinds of creations using LEGO blocks. There will be group projects, challenges and competitions, as well as plenty of time to build on your own. Students will get to take their own set of LEGO blocks home!

Tennis Fun Ages 6-8

Learn the basic skills of tennis - from gripping the racquet to proper forehand/backhand swings and serving. Play tennis games, have skills contests, and most of all have fun while learning!

Camp will be held at the VSU tennis courts; parking for drop-off and pick-up in the West end of the Education Center parking lot.

Please note: no early drop-off for this camp. Staff will be available to check in your child after 8:45 a.m. All you need to bring is your tennis racquet, a hat or visor, and sunscreen! Water will be available on-site.

Basic Beaded Jewelry Workshop Ages 12+ (adults welcome!)

Please note: This is a ONE-SESSION afternoon workshop!

Have you been thinking about giving beading a try? Or are you not sure you are doing it “right?” Discover how to make beautiful and durable beaded jewelry for yourself or to give as gifts. Learn basic beading techniques while creating a necklace, bracelet, and earrings to take home. Tools and materials will be provided. This would be a great parent/child experience, but adults on their own are welcome. No experience needed.

During this class you will have the chance to build 10 to 15 different vehicles and have time to design your own. This is a great class for experienced LEGO enthusiasts. You will receive your own set of LEGO TECHNIC blocks to take home.

Printmaking Pros Ages 9-12 (NOTE: Afternoon Camp)

Design and produce artwork based on your favorite summer activities, including a simple one-color, screen-printed t-shirt. Campers must provide a t-shirt without a pocket for screenprint project (100% cotton is best.) The t-shirt image will also be transferred to paper and a small painted canvas. Optional: campers may bring in an additional cotton item such as a pillowcase or flat cotton/denim book bag that may be found in the crafts department of Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, or Michaels. All other supplies included. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, or bring an old shirt to wear over your clothes.

Japanese Braided Jewelry Workshop Ages 12+ (Adults welcome!)

Note: This is a ONE-DAY afternoon workshop!

Learn the basics of Kumihimo, an ancient Japanese braiding art used to create beautiful cords from fibers or fibers and beads. Learn to braid these cords and turn them into a necklace by adding a clasp and pendant. Tools and materials will be provided. This would be a great parent/child experience, but adults on their own are welcome. No experience needed.

Girls and Guys: get a taste of the fashion world! Learn self-esteem building skills through accepting and appreciating your physical attributes, good attitude, cooperation with others, and body alignment. Family and friends will be invited to the end-of-camp fashion show on Friday.

Movie Making Magic Ages 12+ (Note: Afternoon Camp)

From scripting to filming, editing, and watching the finished product on the big screen, you will learn the steps of making a 5-minute movie. On the first two days, you will divide into groups, brainstorm scripts, and cast your film using your fellow campers as actors. On Wednesday, film your movie three different times from different angles. Thursday is editing day, where each individual edits his or her own final product. Add music if you wish! On Friday, you will have a movie viewing party to which you can invite family and friends.

Calling all junior architects! Construct mini-communities, a mini model of your house and other cool buildings. Transform common supplies into neat looking structures. Learn about architectural concepts and techniques while building small towers out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Build a house using boxes and bags--create your own designs!
