The Department of Communication Arts is a multidisciplinary department with professional programs that lead to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree with majors in Mass Media; Speech Communication with emphases in general speech communication, intercultural organizational communication, and public relations; Theatre with tracks in performance, production, and musical theatre; and Dance. While the B.F.A. is a professional degree, students in all majors learn both the theory and practice of their discipline. The department also stresses the importance of critical thinking and an appreciation for diverse cultural perspectives.
All programs are designed to prepare students for immediate entrance into professional careers. The department also offers four minor and three certificate programs and is host to a variety of student organizations.
Valdosta State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre; and the public relations emphasis in Speech Communication is certified by the Public Relations Society of America, the only public relations program certified in either Georgia or Florida.
Mass Media and Speech Communication grant admission to transfer students with a overall GPA of 2.5 and new college students. In addition, students must maintain a overall GPA of 2.5 to receive the B.F.A. in each of these major. Theatre tracks other than musical theatre and Dance require that students maintain an overall GPA of 2.0.
Students intending to pursue a B.F.A. in Dance and those intending to pursue a B.F.A. in Theatre on the musical theatre track must audition for the faculty committee for the purpose of admission.
