Dean's Statement
Dean Connie RichardsIn 2009 the A&S Symposium on Undergraduate Research celebrated its fifteenth year. We are very proud that we have encouraged excellence across our university community by highlighting the research of our undergraduate students at this annual event. This spring over 100 students participated, and their presentations reflect the wide diversity of research being conducted throughout the College of Arts and Sciences.
Some of our student researchers work alone while many others work collaboratively with faculty and other students. We support and encourage this effort in our college because we believe in modeling excellent research practices for our students. Moreover, we believe in sharing the results of these experiences with others. The A & S Symposium on Undergraduate Research provides the opportunity for a two-day event showcasing these student research endeavors. Additionally, the Undergraduate Research Council Colloquia taking place throughout the fall and spring semesters extends this research dialogue and incorporates it into the university's ongoing academic life. The A&S Undergraduate Research Council is dedicated to helping students engage in meaningful research activities, in valuing those activities when they occur, and in providing an opportunity for faculty and students to enjoy the results of their labors by endowing our community of active scholars interested in the research process with an ongoing learning experience.
