Storm Stories
Andrea Rogers

Every fingerless tree
peers out from under heaven
Cognizant as thunder
in the great, grey sky

A last fading heartbeat
from the cloudy debris
Signals the decision to
retreat from tree to
tree

Who will share in the defeat
of the incandescent earth
Irregular and drowning in the
sloughed-off sky?

From above there comes an answer
in a quickened spiral sheath
A crackling last reminder
of whose hands, whose
feet
