Update on Antivirus Home-use Software

The Division of Information Technology has carefully researched alternatives to quality antivirus home-use software for VSU faculty, staff and students. With the rising cost of the PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security software, the decision has been made not to renew the license which expires in January, 2009. Beginning June 30, 2008 no further downloads of Trend will be possible and the appropriate codes will be removed. IT continues to stress the importance of having antivirus software on your home computers and is recommending AVG Free Edition. The IT Helpdesk will provide AVG installation assistance for any VSU faculty, staff or student. However, technical support after installation is provided by the software publisher, Grisoft:

IMPORTANT: Before downloading AVG, please make sure all prior antivirus software has been removed. Having multiple antivirus systems can cause conflicts.

For more information about the recommended change, AVG step-by-step download instructions and Trend uninstall instructions, please visit:

This change does not affect any VSU-owned computers which will continue to use the Office Scan antivirus software. AVG should not be downloaded to any VSU-owned computer.

Please remember, while the VSU home-use license for Trend will no longer provide effective protection in January, 2009 and an alternative for your home computer will be necessary, AVG is only a recommendation – other alternatives are available, including your own individually licensed copy of Trend.

If you have any further questions, please contact the IT Helpdesk at (229) 245-HELP (4357).
