Sankofa Awards for graduates of African American Studies program

Eighth Annual Multicultural Sankofa

Valdosta State University celebrated the Eighth Annual Multicultural Sankofa on Friday, May 8, 2009, in the Powell Hall Auditorium. Graduates, their families and friends and VSU administrators, faculty and staff were in attendance. The guest speaker for the occasion was Dr. Calvin Walker, associate professor of VSU’s OASIS program and African American Studies program.  

Other program participants included, Ms. Jasmine Calhoun (Senior Sankofa Program Chair) Ms. Jeanice Benefield (Assistant Sankofa Program Chair);); Ms. Lauren Davis (first African American female SGA President); Dr. Jewrell Rivers (Professor of Sociology and African American Studies); Dr. Stanley Jones, (Interim Registrar). Closing meditation was given by Napoleon Bamfo, Professor of Political Science.

Dr. Shirley Hardin, Director of African American Studies, presided over the program and presented the following Sankofa Awards for 2008:

AFAM Student of the Year Award: Ms. Shani McArthur,
Graduating Senior, Marketing Major and African American Studies Minor

AFAM Student of the Year Award: Ms. Courtnee Hawkins,
Graduating Senior, General Studies Major and African American Studies Minor

AFAM Teacher of the Year Award: Dr. Shani Gray,
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice

Multicultural Sankofa Award: Ms. Lauren Davis,
SGA President, Business Management Major

Multicultural Sankofa Award: Ms. LaKeasha Brown,
Black Student League President, Mass Media Major

Appreciation Plaque: Jasmine Calhoun,
Sankofa Program Chair and Biology Major

Appreciation Plaque: Dr. Jewrell Rivers,
Professor of Sociology and African American Studies
